Look at what’s available and choose your fave. Brass, iron, wood and glass are the most typical. It has the gigantic benefit of not rusting or rotting, it’s ornamental when polished and takes an interesting patina over a period of time. It’s also straightforward to plate for a silver or copper finish. Heavily polished door knobs will taint to an excellent patina so long as they don’t seem to be lacquered.  Iron knobs need shielding excepting pure black which is slow to rust. The most well liked sort of protection is to color them, but oiling or waxing look more natural and wear to a pleasant patina over a period of time. Ebony and fruitwoods are conventional but modern hardwoods are typically used now, frequently stained to seem like ebony.
