LOTE is one of the Key Learning Areas (KLA) identified by the Queensland Studies Authority and it is taught as a compulsory subject in years 4-10 in many Queensland schools. The most common languages taught in Queensland schools, roughly in order of popularity are Japanese, French, German, Mandarin Chinese and Indonesian. Community languages such as Vietnamese, Italian and Modern Greek are also subjects that are registered with syllabi for OP eligibility.
There are a few careers where ability in a LOTE is the primary requirement (translator, interpreter) but many more where it is a very useful additional skill, which can help make a difference in accessing a position in a course or occupation. Large international firms will employ an accountant or lawyer who can also speak French ahead of one who does not have ability in a LOTE. Most international airline crew members wear at least two flag badges indicating languages in which they can communicate.
At Groves we do not make LOTE mandatory, we merely make recommendations about curriculum to the families who are interested. There are many self-teaching LOTE packages available. Families who have no previous language learning can experience success learning a language through the use of a learning package. These packages can be expensive as far as initial outlay is concerned but the expense is only incurred once and the material can be used by children learning at different paces and levels. The two most common LOTE packages chosen by our families are Rosetta Stone and The Learnables. These programs are available for all the above languages, and allow families to enjoy the experience of learning a new language together.
